WASHINGTON — Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s six-day trip to the U.S. last week was the first glimpse of his country’s playbook to deal with the potential return of former President Donald Trump and the broader rise of isolationism in the U.S.

The 72 agreements listed in a fact sheet issued after the meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and Kishida is likely a record and is intended to show the depth and breadth of the alliance. Kishida’s address to a joint session of Congress, meanwhile, was an effort to reach out to Republicans.
