Chesline Pierre-Paul combines her disruptive instincts with lateral thinking to alter the perceptions of others.

What’s your story?

I am a unicorn. I am a disruptor, a media & language activist, poet, anti-colonialist, transformation coach, and social impact expert on innovation, economic empowerment, and rebellious leadership. I bring into disruptive harmony worlds that are customarily removed from one another: activism and purposed entrepreneurship. I create the spaces I wished I had to support voices of the resistance that are denied, removed, and delegitimized.

What excites you most about your industry?

The potentialities. Us being ushered into a new era where socialpreneurs, poets, anti-colonialists, co-resistors, activists, and passionpreneurs create new stages, new spaces, new paradigms of what’s possible and normalizable. I see more spaces in the underground counterculture of BIPOC self-established industry leaders, luminaries, and industry-makers. My power and responsibility is in tying their voices into a continuum that is industry-wide and overarching.

What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?

Normal is the minimum requirement that dictates what convenience comes to be established as. I love to be the foregrounder of new alternatives, future-minded paradigms, and ultimate disruption. What drives me is knowing I straddle different spaces – activism and socialpreneurship – and as such, get to see what one side of the equation can’t. My power and responsibility then is to push the edges of normal into disruption, so that what was once presumed to be impossible, comes to be industry-defining and -making. I want the next generations to be beholden to norms that make anti-oppression sexy, palatable, industry-defining.

What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?

Adaptability. And developing a refined acumen for innovational intelligence. Thinking transdisciplinarily has allowed me to connect dots that aren’t presumed to be connectable. Understanding that limitations are negotiable frontiers that put my vision against any arbitrarily posited norms of convenience, normalcy, or oppression. And most importantly, surrendering to the intelligence of my own intuition. Trusting the vision even when it isn’t all-encompassingly fathomable to what’s rational in me. And building a posse of souls around me that elevate my voice because of what they see when they behold me and my vision.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?

Whatever insults your intelligence is a gift you ought not to receive. And that your vision is bestowed upon you, and it speaks to what solely you are uniquely positioned to perceive that no else can comprehend. Yet. Trust the unfathomable in you that appears to be nonsensical or non-rationalizable, and understand that it speaks to a degree of beauteousness, intelligence power, growth, agency, self-power, that will be revealed and unleashed in due time. Don’t concern yourself with the aesthetics of your power – be. And dare to be. Whole. And untamed.

Who inspires you?

Concha Buika. Brené Brown. Liz Gilbert. Janet Mock. My late grandmother – Marianne. My mother – Marie Magdaline. My soul sister Lina V. My chosen sister Tatyana.

What have you learnt recently that blew you away?

That I am already arrived, already complete. My journey is all about becoming more of myself. Also, when I surrender and follow my intuition, there are depths of knowledge in me that are unfolded, which I would never have foreknown. Yet, they spring forth from me, every time I allow for the totality of myself to be seen, centered, and in attendance.

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?

Nothing. Every hurt, pain, doubt, uncertainty, helped me nourish an understanding of self so stark, irrevocable, life-giving, and life-affirming, that I blossomed into one of the most creationally freed and accomplished souls I know. There is a quality of empathy core to souls who have known systemic erasure and invalidation, that empowers us to be THE most compassionate humans of our micro-cosm. For that I am forevermore grateful.

How do you unwind?

By dancing, karaoke, reading, laughing, crying, painting, and playing the violin. I adoooore spending time with me soul and chosen family and having conversations that go on till all hours where life itself is a malleable truth we decompose, controvert, and re-assemble at will. Having a few drinks with them, spending time with my godchildren and my baby brother – help me divorce myself from the vision of self I hold on to and exist parallelly to it in a world dominated by laughter, in/consequentiality, übermost simplicity, and levity.

What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?

That whatever story of illegitimacy, invalidation, existential insufficiency, and constitutional unworthiness I had harbored internally had transmuted into my practice. My incapacity to believe that my abundance is my default-set state of autonomy, grace, and self-determining is what caused me to sub/consciously self-sabotage so deathlessly that I never aimed higher than what convenience, fear, and self-distrust had instated. I never fully knew the extent to which I thought myself unworthy of affirmation, radical reverence, glory, merit, recognition, and grace.
